A poster of the famous classic the 'Mond Crucifixion' painting by Raphael (1483-1520).
Originally part of an altarpiece in the Church of San Domenico, Città di Castello, Umbria. Jesus is on the Cross, with Our Lady and St. John the Evangelist standing either side, and St. Mary Magdalene and St. Jerome kneeling down (the altar in the Church of San Domenico having been originally dedicated to the latter). Angels either side of the Cross hold golden chalices in which they catch the Precious Blood of Jesus, flowing from his wounds, a reminder of the chalice holding the Precious Blood which would have been on the altar originally below the painting.
The sun and moon visible contemporarily symbolise the eclipse that took place at Christ's death. Our Lady and St. John look out towards the viewer, as if to invite us to have compassion on their sorrow and on Christ's bitter pains. A beautiful artistic classic.
